    Description

This is an original antique 1876 catalog of men’s hats issued by the Keith Brothers of Chicago, Illinois.  This catalog is a booklet format of 24 pages plus 12 memoranda pages at the end making 36 pages total plus the covers measuring about 5.5” x 3.25”    The front cover is title:
Keith Bros. – Wholesale Dealers in HATS, CAPS, STRAW GOODS, Men’s Furnishing Goods, Millinery and Notions – 246, 248, 250, 252 Madison St., Chicago
The second page has text indicating this catalog features the company’s offering of “…fashionable shapes for the Spring trade” and is dated February 15th, 1876.  This catalog features engravings illustrating about 51 different hat styles sold by the company in 1876 including hats for men, boys and children.   The hats shown range from a silk stovepipe style top hat to derby style hats, conductor caps and more.  Some of the hats have names like “Fast Mail”, “Hospador”, “Boy’s Spy” and more.   The last 12 pages of the catalog are blank lined paper for writing memos.  The original owner wrote mostly neatly on the these pages in pencil and sepia ink in what looks like maybe Swedish or Norwegian language (catalog is English language).   There is also some sepia ink writing on the front and back cover and two facing pages with hat illustrations have some sepia ink blots and writing.    The catalog is fully complete and otherwise in excellent condition.
This catalog is an original antique issued in 1876 offering a great view of styling in men’s hats for the Centennial year of the United States.  Email any questions.  Thanks for looking.
