The envelope gives interesting historical facts about this currency:
“Photographically reproduced from examples in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.
They range in date from 1759 to 1781, and in value from two pounds to two hundred dollars.
The originals were official Virginia treasury notes, printed in the colonies from engraved plates on the best handmade rag paper.
Prominent government officials signed the notes, which were numbered by hand as a protection against counterfeiting.
For example, the signatures of Robert Carter Nicholas, treasurer of the colony, and Payton Randolph, later president of the First Continental Congress, appear on the Twelve Crown Note.”
